Course Description

Individual instruction in conducting skills, score reading, and rehearsal techniques. By special arrangement, practice in conducting within the Goucher College ensemble programs. Prerequisites: MUS 106 and permission of the instructor.

Course Objectives

To provide instruction in the elements of conducting and score study. Conducting is a multi-faceted discipline that encompasses all aspects of musical knowledge. Based on each student's needs and career goals, the following skills will be covered: metric beat patterns, baton technique, gestural technique, independence of hands, score study and interpretation, ensemble rehearsal techniques, elements of instrumentation and/or vocal diction, performance practice, music bibliography, and related career and business issues.

Musical scores and excerpts will be assigned on an individual basis. The following resources will be assigned to develop skills in score analysis and aural error detection in rehearsal situations.
