Introduction to Music Literature (MUS 100)

This course aims to improve active listening skills, to develop appropriate vocabulary for writing knowledgeably about music, to develop an historical and social perspective on musical styles within the liberal arts tradition, to survey the repertoire of Western music, to compare it to Nonwestern music, and to stimulate curiosity about musical styles that may be unfamiliar.

MUS 100 fulfills General Education Requirement #9 (for students who entered prior to Fall 2011) and provides a solid grounding in music history and literature. For students entering the college in Fall 2011, MUS 100 fulfills the new Textual Analysis and Critical Perspectives Liberal Education Requirement. Students who want to learn how to read music and study basic theory (i.e. scales, keys, harmony, rhythm, etc.), should take MUS 101 (described below).

Fundamentals of Music Theory (MUS 101)

At the end of this course, students will possess a working knowledge of musical notation in treble and bass clefs, basic music vocabulary, rhythm and meter, and the foundations of tonal harmony (scales, keys, intervals, chords).

MUS 101 fulfills General Education Requirements #8 and #9 (for students who entered prior to Fall 2011) and provides a solid grounding in basic music theory. For students entering the college in Fall 2011, MUS 101 fulfills the new Artistic/Creative Expression Liberal Education Requirement. Students desiring a good introduction to music history and literature should take MUS 100 (described above) instead of this class.
