2012 Maryland Early Brass Festival

All events are free and open to the public through the generous support of the Elizabeth B. and David Allan Lectureship Fund.

10:00 – 11:45 a.m.

Festival Natural Trumpet Ensemble (Merrick Hall)
Depending on attendance and instrument availability, participants will be able to play trumpet ensemble music and gain experience with these unique instruments. Participants are invited to bring their own instruments. Sheet music will be provided.

11:45 am – 12:50 p.m.
Lunch (not provided; Stimson Cafeteria, Athenaeum Restaurant will be open)
1:00 – 2:20 p.m.

Josh Cohen Clinic (Merrick Hall)
Josh Cohen will discuss the realities of getting into the field of playing the Baroque trumpet professionally as well as the demands of performance preparation. Selected trumpeters will be coached in a master class setting.  

2:30 – 3:30 p.m.

Lecture: The Evolution of the Piccolo Trumpet (Merrick Hall)
Festival Director Elisa Koehler will present a lecture-demonstration that considers the question: Is smaller really better? Topics covered will include the keyed bugle, the post horn, the E-flat cornet, pocket cornets, smaller trumpets in orchestral literature, and much more.

3:30 – 4:15 pm           

Historic Brass Instrument Petting Zoo (Merrick Hall)
Following a brief introduction by Elisa Koehler of the instruments available, anyone in attendance is welcome to try them out. Sterilizing spray for mouthpieces provided.

4:30 – 5:30 p.m.

Dress Rehearsal for Concert (Haebler Memorial Chapel)
4:30 - Festival Natural Trumpet Ensemble; 5 pm – Old Guard Baroque Trumpets

5:30 – 7:00 p.m.

Dinner (not provided; Stimson Cafeteria will be open; local restaurants nearby at Towson Town Center just south of campus on Dulaney Valley Road)

7:30 – 9:30 p.m.

Final Concert (Haebler Memorial Chapel)
Featuring guest artist Josh Cohen, the U.S. Army Old Guard Fife & Drum Corps Baroque Trumpets, and the Festival Natural Trumpet Ensemble.
