MUS 100: Introduction to Music

Course Description

Designed to provide information for the basic understanding and enjoyment of music. This course is intended for those who have no formal instruction in music.

Course Objectives

This course aims to improve active listening skills, to develop appropriate vocabulary for writing knowledgeably about music, to develop an historical and social perspective on musical styles within the liberal arts tradition, to survey the repertoire of Western music and to compare it to Nonwestern music, and to stimulate interest in and curiosity about musical styles that may be unfamiliar.

Recommendations for Goucher Students

MUS 100 fulfills General Education Requirement #9 and provides a solid grounding in music literature and history. Students who want to learn how to read music and study basic music theory (scales, keys, harmony, rhythm, etc.), should take MUS 101 instead of this class.
