"Lost Notebook" Close-Reading Tasks

1)  Find notebook passages that suggest character types,  scenes, situations, or issues relevant to the stories we read.

2)  What kinds of general issues does Hawthorne return to often and what does that say about his inner concerns as an artist and a human being in the period between 1835-1840?

3)  What do his notebook entries suggest about his opinions about the scene, situation, or issue, and how might that relate to his intentions as similar elements later appeared in one of his stories?
