Paragraph Coherence: you can add coherence within existing paragraphs
- rewrite sentences to repeat intentionally the nouns of the same type related to your topic, and to create sentences of similar or exactly parallel structure;
- add internal transition words to sentences [see linked table];
- make sure each paragraph does a clear type of task
- tell the story of unfamiliar events you will later analyze--following paragraphs explain the event stages chronologically or (better!) in order of importance,
- describe the parts of the thing you will later analyze--following paragraphs explain the parts in description order or (better!) in order of importance,
- give an example of the thing you have just analyzed or will later analyze,
- explain a process from start to finish before you analyze its stages,
- classify the thing or process or idea you will analyze and explain how this class of things/processes/ideas differs from one it might be confused with (e.g., two types of film noir heroes),
- compare and contrast the features of events or things or processes you have just described to clarify how they work or what is unusual about them, perhaps using analogy ("The Third Man is to Casablanca as The Colbert Report is to Fox News.")
- explain the causes or effects of events, things, or processes you have just described
