This pious collection of meditations on the Psalms mingles strangely with the contents of Lady Anne's Memoir of her days as a Royalist agent in Puritan London. If we look at the whole text as an attempt to defend her reputation from slights dating from her deception by the would-be bigamist, Colonel Bamford, and from the charge of disloyalty for helping Prince James of York to escape government custody, the combination starts to make more sense. The 1875 date (above) marks the republication of the Memoirs alone as an autobiography by the Camden Society (London), edited by John Gough Nichols. If you want to work with Halkett at greater length, copies of the original 1778 edition, as well as the Camden Society reprint of the Memoirs, are located in the Eisenhower Library at Johns Hopkins.
