Note that the ESTC records an earlier, 1647 publication of just the "Noble Numbers," which may have been issued first before the whole collection was published. We know this because the larger edition was printed in octavo format (8 pages of type on each pressed leaf), whereas the 1647 "Noble Numbers" are printed in the larger quarto format (4 leaves of type on each pressed leaf). ESTC records no other publications of Herrick's collected works through 1700, when English 211's literary survey technically ends. Herrick's reputation was restored from oblivion by twentieth-century critics.
