implication (vs. inference)

        A text may "imply" meanings without explicitly stating them.  This is also called connotative meaning.  A reader may "infer" meanings by correctly detecting and construing connotative meaning.  To repeat, texts and their authors imply.  Readers infer.  Please help to halt our culture's gradual confusion of these two valuable words.
