"the Lemnian horror"

According to myth, the men of Lemnos reviled their wives, preferring to take concubines the Thracian women they had captured in war raids.  The women, outraged, rose up one night and slew their husbands.  The older sources for this have been lost, but the tale is recounted in Roman era epics about Jason and the Argonauts, who visit Lemnos a year after the massacre.
