Follows Tolkien’s process of revision, and locates sources and analogues of Hobbit events, persons, things and places. Do not expect this to be exhaustive of what we may find in our own investigations. Also, one major goal of this project is to train your investigative skills, so finding it yourself will be of value even if you can locate it (or something like it) in Anderson’s introduction or notes. If you find something Anderson does not know about, you are doubly rewarded.

Consult this routinely about almost anything Tolkien might have thought about, even if it does not appear by name in the text of his published writings. Using the index, work through synonyms and related terms to determine what we can learn about the topic from his personal opinions. Note that this does not constitute “smoking gun” evidence of the source for or meaning of things found in the text. We must always consider the influence of his imagination, first and foremost, and of other sources, works of literature read or events experienced, etc.

Web Sites:
The Tolkien Society: http://www.tolkiensociety.org
An enthusiast site with connections to the academic study of Tolkien’s works. Sponsor of an annual conference on Tolkien’s works which draws numerous academic contributors, and an annual “Tolkien Reading Day” on March 25 (explained by the society as the date of the downfall of Sauron).
The Tolkien Collector: http://www.tolkiencollector.com
A site created by Mike Williams for commercial collectors and fans, useful for its attention to the publishing history of JRRT’s books in all editions. This is the web page for the 1938 American first edition of The Hobbit: http://www.tolkiencollector.com/pages/record0123.html
and its link to a publishing history of the edition, including a digital image of the Unwin publishing firm’s reader review (by 10-year-old Rayner Unwin, son of the firm’s head):
http://www.tolkiencollector.com/hobbhist.htm
Includes printing variant list.
The Tolkien Library: http://www.tolkienlibrary.com
Pieter Collier’s site for collectors of Tolkien editions offers another source of information on the American first edition, with somewhat more careful bibliographic information about the cover and title page, and the illustrations. See this web page:
http://www.tolkienlibrary.com/booksbytolkien/hobbit/editions.htm
The American Tolkien Society: http://www.americantolkiensociety.org
Created in 1975, the organization and its web site are not nearly as rich with information as the English and European sites (above). The society did begin promoting “Tolkien Week” during the week containing September 22 (Bilbo’s and Frodo’s birthdays). Not coincidentally, that week is also the week of the first edition of The Hobbit. All sources currently available are unanimous in declaring September 21 as the date in 1937 when the English edition was begun. No date has been discovered for the first impression of the American edition in 1938, though the second impression began on March 1.
