    Are you Searching for Solutions to math problems?  This web-based unit will introduce students to strategies and real-life practice activities for applying problem-solving skills.  Students will investigate real problems through a variety of websites and group activities.  They will become familiar with eight strategies and will practice using these strategies to use the Internet to obtain information, analyze data, make decisions, and apply problem-solving skills to find solutions to real-life situations.  This web-based unit ties directly into the Passport to Mathematics program and can be used in conjunction with the first unit of this text.  It also supports the BCPS Goals and Indicators for Mathematics.  Specific indicators which are reinforced through this unit include:

bulletStudents will apply guess-and-check, find-a-pattern, draw-a-diagram, and other problem-solving strategies to develop inductive and deductive thinking.
bulletStudents will use mathematical reasoning to solve and check routine or innovative problems that require varying amounts of time, involve cooperative and independent tasks, and have no, one, or multiple solutions.
bulletStudents will choose from mental mathematics, estimation, algorithms, diagrams, and calculators to solve various types of problems appropriately.

In addition, this unit supports the NCTM Standards for Mathematics by including "... numerous and varied experiences with problem solving as a method of inquiry and application so that students can--

bulletuse problem-solving approaches to investigate and understand mathematical content;
bulletformulate problems from situations within and outside mathematics;
bulletdevelop and apply a variety of strategies to solve problems, with emphasis on multi-step and non-routine problems;
bulletverify and interpret results with respect to the original problem situation;
bulletgeneralize solutions and strategies to new problem situations;
bulletacquire confidence in using mathematics meaningfully. "
