Begin this unit with a PowerPoint presentation entitled "Searching for Solutions."  This presentation can be used as an introduction to the basic steps for problem solving.  Through this presentation, students review the basic steps for problem solving and they are given practice problems to study in order to learn how to use clues and strategies for solving problems.  Although answers to these problems are provided, students must go through the step-by-step process to determine the most appropriate solution to these problems.

The strategies listed below are the basis for successful problem-solving.  They may be used in any order and suggested activities may be used for direct instruction, guided instruction or as independent classwork, depending upon the level of the student.
