Loupgarou au table

At a restaurant somewhere between Gonaives and Saint Marc we chanced onto a pair of business partners with a good idea: to export certain craft items made with local materials by artisans in the mountains. The European partner was voluble at first (what businessman would lose a chance to promote his enterprise to the public?) until the Haitian partner shut him up. You will never hear anything about any business here that does anything good for the people, he said, because once the affair is known, someone comes to take a bite out of it. The notion of the loupgarou, or vampire, is alive and well in Haitian Vodou; they suck just a little more blood at every crossroad, blocus after blocus after blocus....
