German 130

Fall 2003

German 130 is a demanding course at the intermediate level. The course addresses all different language skills and emphasizes the spoken language in real life situations as well as the comprehension and application of grammatical concepts.

This course covers an extensive review and chapters 9 through 12 of the German program Kontakte. (4th edition). By the end of this program, students are expected to communicate adequately both orally and in written form.

It is one of the goals of this course to extend the communicative skills through class discussions, role-play, partner exercises etc. Experience has shown that comprehension skills can be considerably improved through working with tapes, videos, and news broadcasts provided in the Thormann Center.

Homework is assigned in each class and includes grammar exercises, short compositions, selected reading material and independent lab work. All assignments have to be completed and handed in on time in order to be accepted and graded. I strongly recommend rewriting any written assignment after my correction. The short compositions must be typed (double-spaced, with a 12- point font).  No electronic submissions are accepted. Late submissions of assignments will result in a lower grade (one grade lower per extra day).  Should you have to miss class, please let me know beforehand and put written assignment in my mailbox in Van Meter (NOT in campus mail).

Workbook exercises need to be completed before each chapter test (see other side for schedule) and are part of the final grade. These exercises include grammar and listening comprehension exercises. The necessary audio files can be downloaded under: www.goucher.edu/thormann.

Tests are given at the end of each chapter and cannot be rescheduled (see other side for schedule). While a chapter test typically covers the material of just one chapter, our course builds on the cumulative acquisition of language skills. Therefore, you are responsible for all previously covered vocabulary and grammar. Please expect occasional vocabulary and grammar quizzes; they are part of the final grade.

Attendance: Each student is allowed a maximum of 4 absences from class per semester. Two percentage points will be subtracted from the final grade for each additional absence. You are responsible for knowing the material presented on a given day, even if you are not present in class that day. Please contact a fellow student for that information, assignments, etc.

Please contact me if you have any questions, and ACE when you feel the need for extra practice, support before tests, etc.
