Text:  Langan, John.  English Skills with Readings.  5th ed.  New York:  McGraw-Hill, 2002.

Objectives:  Upon successful completion of English 103, students will be able to:

Method:  The steps in the writing process will be stressed.

Requirements:

  1. Compositions:  You will write five papers out of class that vary in length and purpose.
  2. Workshops:  An in-class workshop will be conducted for each paper.  Bring two typed copies of your paper to the workshop, so you can turn one in and share one with your partner.  Workshop attendance is mandatory; failure to attend will lower the paper’s grade by five points.
  3. Journal writing:  In order to practice writing, you will make journal entries for ten weeks.  Refer to the handout on journal writing for further instructions.
  4. In-class writing:  To practice writing independently and extemporaneously, you will complete two in-class writings.
  5. Quizzes:  Quizzes may be given periodically on grammar, readings, or other coursework.
  6. Assignments:  Various out-of-class assignments will be given to supplement in-class work.  You should bring your syllabus with you to each class so that additions and/or adjustments can be made.
  7. Participation and attendance:  Both are expected and can affect your final grade.  Missing more than three classes could result in a reduced final grade, and missing more than six classes could result in failure of the course.  In addition, chronically arriving late for class or leaving early will be counted toward an absence.

Other Considerations:

1.      All out-of-class work must be typed in 12 point and double-spaced.

2.      All work must be original.  Plagiarism will be reported to the Honor Board and could result in a zero for the assignment or failure of the course.

3.      All work must be turned in on time or a failing grade will result.  An exception may be made in the case of a documented emergency and only after review by me.  Contact me as soon as soon as possible if an extenuating circumstance exists or an emergency arises.  Assignments may be e-mailed to me prior to the start of class if an absence must occur on the date the assignment is due.

4.      If you are absent, you should obtain class notes and additional assignments from another student and should complete assignments and be prepared for the next class.

5.      If you need to contact me, you should do so using the above e-mail address and should allow a response time of one day.  Generally, I will check my e-mail after 8:00 p.m. each day.

6.      Cell phones and pagers should be turned off during class.

7.      If you wish to discuss any aspect of this course with me, you may do so prior to the start of the class or by phone at an arranged time.
