Who We Are

The "Paraphrase-Plagiarism Risk Quiz" was designed and edited by Arnold Sanders, Associate Professor of English and Writing Program Director at Goucher College, with programming assistance and web-design by Susan Garrett Weiss, Assistant Professor of English at Goucher and in English and Linguistics at Western Maryland University.  Additional programming assistance was provided by Kristin Stanley, a senior Computer Science major at Mount St. Mary's College.  Sample texts were researched, and first drafts of paraphrases and response pages were written by Peter Ramos, Goucher '90, a former Instructor of English at Goucher who now holds a Ph.D. in English literature from the State University of New York at Buffalo (2003).  In 2004, the pages were redesigned by Elizabeth Fields, a senior English major with a biology minor.

The concept was based on the research of Miguel Roig, especially his 1997 Psychological Record article, "Can Undergraduate Students Determine Whether Text Has Been Plagiarized?" (47:1 [Winter] 113-23).  A bibliography of related scholarship including Roig's is appended below, because we believe our colleagues and their writings are essential collaborators in our project.  We hope you will be interested in exploring this marvelously complex topic by following their pioneering research.

Finally, this project could not have been completed without the generous offer of a 2001 Summer Technology Grant made possible by the Academic Dean of Goucher College.  We thank former Dean Peter Bardaglio and former Professor Leslie Harris, Decker Chair for Instructional Technology, for valuable assistance at every stage of the process.
