Knowing/Not-Knowing the Truth (for Tom Carnicelli--thanks)

I may know the truth but not know I know it.

I may know the truth, but it may not be the whole truth.

I may know the truth, but (pace Vygotsky) not be able to name it.

I may know the truth, but not be able to tell the truth.

I may know the truth and believe it to be false.

I may truly know a falsehood.

I may know the truth but not the truth about the truth.

I may know the truth, but then again, I may not.

Note: My former teacher at U.N.H., Tom Carnicelli, once button-holed me in the hall apropos of a comment I had made in class and asked/announced with an amused grin, "You're one of those people who believe that they can know the truth, aren't you?"  I had to confess that was so.  In later years, I have moderated my claim to being one of those people who believe they may know the truth.  Trust me--it's a huge difference.
